Musical Milestones – What is my child learning?

It takes a lot to learn an instrument! At Music for Life, we like to make sure students are musically challenged whilst have the most amount of fun in their lessons. We ensure all Tutors are the best qualified and experienced teachers in the area and support them with professional training and checks, including an Enhanced DBS check.

Each musician is unique and that goes for Music for Life Tutors too! They bring their own fantastic expertise and that’s what makes the lessons so special. However, we all agree that musical foundations are vital to learning an instrument. Musical Milestones provide an idea of where your child is up to each year, and what they’ve got to look forward to.

Musical Milestones help parents and students understand what is being learned and why it matters, making progress visible beyond just pieces played or grades achieved.

Tutors bring their own expertise and teaching style, but shared milestones ensure all students build strong musical foundations, no matter the instrument or teacher.

By setting achievable, age‑appropriate goals (from first melodies to performances), students can celebrate success regularly and feel excited about what’s coming next.

Foundation Milestones

Instrument Basics Master

  • Know the names of all parts of the instrument (or vocal areas)
  • Be able to put the instrument together (or look after their voice)
  • Understand sound production


  • Some examples from Tutors:
  • Piano: hand position, seat position, keyboard geography
  • Guitar: Names of strings, parts of the guitar, frets
  • Drums: Hand and feet technique, coordination and independence
  • Strings: Posture, basic bow hold, pizzicato and arco, how the instrument works and how to care for it
  • Singing: Breath control, personal warmup, vowels, placement and projection


Melody Maker

  • Play their first melody eg using first 5 notes, this could feature improvisation
  • Recognise how to adjust the intonation or tuning to make it sound great


Stage Superstar

  • Preparation, Practice, Confidence, Ensemble Skills, Enjoy!
  • Perform to peers or family by themselves or in a group

Beat Boss

  • Keep a steady pulse (beat) when playing eg duets, metronome, backing track, accompaniment
  • Feel the pulse / groove
  • Be able to play a tune at a different tempo, for example, faster or slower
  • Play a range of rhythms, give notes and rests the correct value

Theory Mastermind

  • Recognise minims, crotchets and quavers, along with how to write these
  • Use musical notation or tab notation to show some of the notes or chords you have learnt


  • Some examples from Tutors:
  • Reading the music from a page
  • Understanding the movement of pitch ascending and descending across/along the strings
  • Recognise note values and names for treble and bass clef
  • Time signatures
  • Loud and soft
  • Recognising open string notes on relevant clef for your string instrument
  • Recognise a scalic sequence ABCDEFGA
  • Rhythm, melody, harmony etc in stages
  • Aural perception


Performance Pro

  • A second, more developed performance opportunity

  • Perform a solo (by themselves) to school peers, end of term/year concert or assembly or to family members
  • Play in a group/band
  • Do an exam (just an option)
  • Play with accompaniment
