Richard Ward BA(Hons) PGCE

Richard has been playing musical instruments since the age of 5. Trying out every instrument he could get his hands on to including the piano, violin, clarinet, flute and trumpet. Richard formed his first rock band at the age of nine which started as a Beatles cover band but then developed into producing own material to form a school chapel band which toured around local primary and high schools offering music assembles. At high school Richard’s passion for music grew, involved in school choirs, orchestras, windband, jazz bands, guitar groups, band pit orchestra to support music school productions, and played for Staffordshire county brass band.

Richard developed his instrumental skills through music and drama festivals in Macclesfield, Crewe and Newcastle-under-Lyme and taking ABRSM and Rockschool based examinations on guitar, piano, trumpet and music theory.  Outside school Richard formed a hard rock/metal band playing original music that gigged across Staffordshire, Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire reaching the final of 2002 North Staffordshire and 2005’s UK’s Bloodstock unsigned battle of the band competitions. After graduating from University of Leeds in 2006 with a BA in Popular and World Musics, specialising in composition, and performance practice, Richard went on to set up his own music studio business that offered band rehearsal, music tuition, sound engineering, equipment hire and mobile disco services.

After 7 years of instrumental teaching experience for guitar and piano privately and at local primary and secondary schools, Richard took on a PGCE in secondary music to become a fully qualified teacher and is now currently head of music at a Stoke-on-Trent based high school teaching his own devised music curriculum for KS3 and KS4, leading extra-curricular music ensembles and workshops. Richard currently continues with his music business, and head of music teaching post alongside working for Music for Life and plays bass guitar in a successful rock pub/function band called Jacque Rabbit and regularly provides sound engineering services for the current artists.
