Helen Capener BA, PGCE

BrassPianoWoodwind

Helen began piano lessons at 9 and brass lessons at 11, both privately and in school. It was the positive teaching and learning experience from these that prompted her to pass on her knowledge to others, resulting in her gaining a BA Hons in Music at the Manchester Metropolitan University and a PGCE in Secondary Education of Music at Liverpool Hope University. At 14 years old Helen held the position of principal cornet at both the Lions Youth Brass band and the City of Stoke on Trent adult Brass Band. It was during her time at the Lions Youth Brass that they won the title of National Youth Brass Band Champions of Great Britain! Helen was also a member of the Cheshire County Youth Brass Band and had the privilege of travelling to America where she played in Grand Central Station and in front of the White House.

Helen has played with many bands in Cheshire and Stoke on Trent during her 28 years of playing but now tends to help out local bands for competitions and concerts due to having a family. Helen had taken all of her ABRSM exams – Grades 1 to 8 – in Piano and Brass by the age of 17 and continues to use the ABRSM exam board now for all of her pupils. She has been teaching now for 7 years and currently holds a 100% pass rate for exam results. Helen’s ethos throughout all of her lessons is to ensure all pupils have fun learning whilst ensuring progress is made.
